“With less than a year to go to the Olympic Games, there is an urgent need for the government to stop blocking thousands of Web sites, censoring online news and imprisoning Internet users,” Reporters Without Borders said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Though the communist government promotes Internet use, it has also set up an extensive surveillance and filtering system to prevent Chinese from accessing material considered obscene or politically subversive.<\/p>\n
