Xinhua English made a brief announcement on Monday morning\u00a0that Liu Zhijun, China’s former railways<\/a> minister, was charged with bribery and abuse of power and handed a suspended death sentence by the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n The South China Morning Post sets the background of the case, including the context of the new leadership\u2019s vows to fight corruption and the reaction of Chinese netizens<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n Liu was sacked as railways minister in 2011 after eight years in the post, and the scandal surrounding him is reported to have involved as much as 800 million yuan (HK$1 billion).<\/p>\n He was charged and convicted of accepting 64.6 million yuan in bribes to help 11 people secure contracts and promotions, Xinhua said.<\/p>\n Users of China\u2019s popular microblog service Sina Weibo were sceptical about his punishment, with some condemning it as too lenient.\u00a0\u201cSuch good news for corrupted officials.
