Residents rioted on Oct. 11 after a newscaster on the street told the cameras that life was returning to normal. Protests continued into the following week, and riot police were called in.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Cartoonist Wang Liming, a.k.a. Rebel Pepper (Biantai Lajiao), drew this in response and wrote a message to the authorities (from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/remonwangxt\/status\/390035840132317184\">Twitter<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n<blockquote><p>Uncle Policeman, the frontline in Yuyao flood response isn\u2019t here. You\u2019ve gone the wrong way. Please go where the people really need you. Liu won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work, but is now serving an 11-year prison sentence for &#8220;inciting subversion of state power.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Xia\u2019s dismissal calls into question partnerships between US institutions and PKU&#8211;professors from Wellesley College wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/164623135\/Open-Letter-Peking-University-on-Behalf-of-Professor-Xia-Yeliang\">open letter<\/a> to the university in September, to no avail. <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/22\/opinion\/beijings-assault-on-academic-freedom.html\">The New York Times published an editorial today exhorting partner institutions to push PKU to bring Xia back.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>In Ah Ping\u2019s take on the dismissal, luminaries from the university\u2019s past hover over campus rubble (left to right): <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cai_Yuanpei\">Cai Yuanpei<\/a>, president from 1916 to 1922; philosopher and essayist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hu_Shih\">Hu Shih<\/a>; and historian <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ch%27ien_Mu\">Ch\u2019ien Mu<\/a>. But cartoonist Xiao Mao has an idea: make the goat a WWII Japanese soldier the wolf a Chinese peasant, and \u201cit doesn\u2019t look violent at all!\u201d Chinese TV is always awash in programs set during the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Sino-Japanese_War\">War of Japanese Aggression<\/a>.\u201d (Xiao Mao)<\/P>\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><em>Want more cartoons?
