{"id":168650,"date":"2014-02-06T16:39:08","date_gmt":"2014-02-07T00:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/?p=168650"},"modified":"2014-02-06T16:39:08","modified_gmt":"2014-02-07T00:39:08","slug":"rfa-reports-first-tibetan-self-immolation-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2014\/02\/rfa-reports-first-tibetan-self-immolation-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"RFA Reports First Tibetan Self-Immolation of 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Radio Free Asia reports that a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/tibet\/ablaze-02062014133904.html\"><strong>Tibetan man in northwestern Qinghai province self-immolated yesterday<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Tibetan living in northwestern China\u2019s Qinghai province has set himself on fire in protest against Beijing\u2019s rule in the first self-immolation protest by Tibetans this year, triggering a security crackdown, local sources said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Phagmo Samdrub, 29, set himself ablaze \u201cfor the cause of Tibet\u201d at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday near the Panchen Day School in Dokarmo township in Tsekhog (in Chinese, Zeku) county in the Malho (Huangnan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, a local resident told RFA\u2019s Tibetan Service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Feb. 5, a Tibetan called Phagmo Samdrub self-immolated for the cause of Tibet,\u201d the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity and adding that Samdrub had been taken away by Chinese authorities.<\/p>\n<p>By the early hours of Thursday, Chinese forces had tightened security \u201cvery conspicuously\u201d\u00a0 in Tsekhog and nearby Rebgong (Tongren) county, the scene of several earlier self-immolation protests, the source said. [<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfa.org\/english\/news\/tibet\/ablaze-02062014133904.html\">Source<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 29-year-old man is the 126th Tibetan to self-immolate since 2009 in a <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2013\/12\/tibetan-monk-self-immolates-gansu\/\">wave of similar protests against Beijing&#8217;s policies in Tibetan regions<\/a>. This is\u00a0the first Tibetan self-immolation since\u00a0late December, when a <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2013\/12\/tibetan-monk-self-immolates-gansu\/\">43-year-old monk died after leaving a suicide note calling for the exiled Dalai Lama&#8217;s return<\/a>.
