The Wall Street Journal reports that\u00a0Chinese director Ning Hao responded defensively to an outspoken\u00a0critic of China’s film censorship<\/a>,\u00a0American filmmaker Oliver Stone; Stone stated that Chinese films need to explore historical events that “stir the water and allow true creativity”<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cYou talk about co-production in China, but you don\u2019t want to face the history of China,\u201d Mr. Stone said, adding that he had tried to coproduce films about Mao and the Cultural Revolution with Chinese companies since he first visited in the 1990s but had repeatedly \u201crun into a wall.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is about time,\u201d said the three-time Academy Award winner. \u201cYou should open up your past the way the United States opened its past.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Ning, who was on the judging panel at the festival, said Mr. Stone was just trying to \u201cfinding fault\u201d with the Chinese film industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we want to go to America to shoot \u20189\/11\u2019, I expect they would say no as well,\u201d Mr. Ning said in an interview during the festival with the state-run Global Times that was posted online on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot judge from a \u2018finding-fault\u2019 perspective on topics that are sensitive,\u201d he said. \u201cChina\u2019s issues aren\u2019t that simple.\u201d [Source<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Last August, Stone, in Japan to\u00a0promote his documentary series, \u201cThe Untold History of the United States,\u201d\u00a0stirred more waters when\u00a0he told Japan to apologize to China for wartime atrocities in a speech to foreign correspondents in Tokyo<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s leaders have expressed \u201cdeep remorse\u201d over the physical damage and psychological pain the country has inflicted on other Asian countries, but repeated visits by cabinet ministers to a controversial war shrine in Tokyo and growing talk of revising the nation\u2019s peace constitution have made other countries skeptical about the intention of these remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said that if Japan came out with a more forthright apology \u201cthat would make front-page headlines everywhere in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
