The official also\u00a0noted\u00a0that the think tank had “ideological problems.”<\/p>\n Last April, an internal party memo\u00a0known as “Document No. 9” warned Party members against seven “false ideological trends.”<\/a>\u00a0On the list were “Western constitutional democracy,” “universal values,” and the “West’s idea of journalism.” Months later, Party political theory journal Seeking Truth (\u6c42\u662f) denounced “Western calls for political reform.”<\/a> Since then,\u00a0the Xi administration has put increased\u00a0emphasis on\u00a0ideological correctness in Party recruitment<\/a>, targeted\u00a0outspoken liberal microbloggers<\/a>\u00a0in social media crackdowns, and made training in the “Marxist view of journalism” \u00a0mandatory for Chinese reporters<\/a>\u00a0to renew their press credentials.<\/p>\n In the month leading up to the recent\u00a0anniversary of the June 4th crackdown<\/a> on Tiananmen Square protesters,\u00a0activists, human rights lawyers, and journalists were placed in detention<\/a>\u2014part of\u00a0government efforts to prevent commemoration\u00a0of the Chinese democracy movement’s quashing<\/a>\u00a025 years ago.<\/p>\n CDT collects directives from a variety of sources and checks them against official Chinese media reports to confirm their implementation.<\/em><\/p>\n Since directives are sometimes communicated orally to journalists and editors, who then leak them online, the wording published here may not be exact.
