As of September 12, the following search terms were blocked on Sina Weibo (not including the \u201csearch for user\u201d function).<\/em><\/p>\n Chinese Jihadist Held in Iraq<\/strong>: Early this month, the New York Times reported that Iraq’s Defense Ministry announced\u00a0the capture of Wang Bo, a Chinese national who had been fighting for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria<\/a>\u00a0(the Times also ran the article in Chinese<\/a>). Last year, the Times reported on\u00a0Wang as\u00a0a rare example of an ethnic Han joining a jihadist group<\/a> in the Middle East. This news comes as global concerns about\u00a0the Islamic State\u00a0are mounting, and as China continues a crackdown on violence in Xinjiang<\/a> which has targeted\u00a0members of the predominately Muslim Uyghur ethnic group<\/a>\u00a0local to the region.\u00a0While China has made efforts to tie violence in Xinjiang to the global jihadist movement<\/a> and gain international support for its counter terror campaign, Beijing\u00a0criticized Barack Obama’s recent announcement on imminent U.S.\u00a0military strikes\u00a0against the Islamic State\u00a0on the\u00a0Iraq-Syria<\/a>\u00a0border, staying\u00a0true to its characteristic commitment to non-interventionism<\/a>.<\/p>\n Rumors About\u00a0Presidents (Past and Present)<\/strong><\/p>\n Xu Zhiyong<\/strong>: Rights lawyer, activist, and New Citizens Movement<\/a> founder Xu Zhiyong was sentenced to four years in prison in January<\/a> for “gathering a crowd to disrupt public order.” Xu’s detention<\/a>, arrest<\/a>, and sentencing are part of a larger crackdown on human rights activists and civil society under Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n More<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n All Chinese-language words are tested using simplified characters. The same terms in traditional characters occasionally return different results.<\/em><\/p>\n CDT Chinese runs a project that crowd-sources filtered keywords on Sina Weibo search. CDT independently tests the keywords before posting them, but some searches later become accessible again.
