After the announcement of a <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2014\/10\/net-closes-ling-jihua\/\">disciplinary investigation into Ling Jihua last year<\/a>, the former presidential advisor was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2015\/07\/hu-jintao-aide-ling-jihua-arrested-expelled-from-party\/\">formally arrested, expelled from the Party, and stripped of all official posts last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>China is demanding that the Obama administration return a wealthy and politically connected businessman who fled to the United States, according to several American officials familiar with the case. Should he seek political asylum, he could become one of the most damaging defectors in the history of the People\u2019s Republic.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]\u00a0The Obama administration has thus far refused to accede to Beijing\u2019s demands for Ling Wancheng, and his possible defection could be an intelligence coup at China\u2019s expense after it was revealed last month that computer hackers had\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/10\/us\/office-of-personnel-management-hackers-got-data-of-millions.html\">stolen the personnel files of millions of American government workers<\/a>\u00a0and contractors. American officials have said that they are nearly certain the Chinese government carried out the data theft.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]\u00a0Christopher K. Johnson, a former C.I.A. analyst focusing on China, said the Chinese leadership might want Mr. Ling\u2019s assistance in prosecuting his older brother. And, Mr. Johnson said, they would want to prevent the \u201ctreasure trove\u201d of knowledge he has about Chinese politics from passing to United States officials.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"250\" data-total-count=\"4248\">\u201cThe leadership would want this guy badly,\u201d Mr. Johnson, now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, said in a telephone interview. \u201cThere\u2019s no question that he would have access to a lot of interesting things.\u201d [<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/04\/world\/asia\/china-seeks-ling-wancheng-businessman-said-to-have-fled-to-us.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=1\">Source<\/a><\/strong>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"250\" data-total-count=\"4248\">Ling Wancheng&#8217;s possible defection comes as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/01\/world\/asia\/us-decides-to-retaliate-against-chinas-hacking.html\">U.S. considers retaliating against China<\/a> for a <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2015\/06\/china-denies-hacking-u-s-government-agency\/\">cyberattack on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management<\/a> that compromised the personal data of\u00a0millions of past and present government employees in June.
