A government official who serves as a liaison to Tibetans claimed on Sunday that Gendun Choekyi Nyima, who was taken into custody in 1995 after being named by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of Panchen Lama at the age of six, is \u201cgrowing up healthily and does not wish to be disturbed.\u201d<\/a><\/strong> From Reuters’s Sui-Lee Wee:<\/p>\n

Norbu Dunzhub denounced the Dalai Lama for declaring the boy as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, saying the selection \u201cignored historical customs and destroyed religious rituals\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe identification was done without authorisation. It was illegal and invalid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Gendun Choekyi Nyima\u2019s disappearance, whose fate remains of deep concern to many Tibetans.<\/p>\n

Though officially atheist, the Chinese Communist Party has long maintained that Gendun Choekyi Nyima is not the real Panchen Lama. <\/p>\n
