{"id":192294,"date":"2016-03-13T20:16:38","date_gmt":"2016-03-14T03:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/?p=192294"},"modified":"2016-03-13T20:16:38","modified_gmt":"2016-03-14T03:16:38","slug":"chinas-censors-denounced-online-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2016\/03\/chinas-censors-denounced-online-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Censors Denounced in Online Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At The New York Times, Chris Buckley reports on an <a href=\"http:\/\/bowenpress.com\/news\/bowen_74189.html\">online letter<\/a> written\u00a0by a Xinhua employee\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/12\/world\/asia\/china-censorship.html\"><strong>denouncing China&#8217;s increasingly tight media controls<\/strong><\/a>, which according to the widely shared\u00a0(and quickly deleted) post &#8220;has triggered tremendous fear and outrage among the public, [who have began to] worry about another Cultural Revolution.\u201d\u00a0Xi Jinping has done much to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/?s=media+control\">strengthen government control over the media.<\/a>\u00a0Last month, he paid a\u00a0visit to leading state media outlets to <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2016\/02\/191569\/\">stress that news must \u201cspeak for the Party.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0After the president&#8217;s Media tour,\u00a0outspoken Internet\u00a0commentator and retired property tycoon Ren Zhiqiang found himself\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2016\/03\/tycoons-silencing-hangs-over-beijings-two-sessions\/\">banished from social media for suggesting<\/a>\u00a0that media should first serve the people who fund it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"310\" data-total-count=\"1088\">\u201cUnder the crude rule of the Internet control authorities, online expression has been massively suppressed, and the public\u2019s freedom of expression has been violated to an extreme degree,\u201d said the<a href=\"http:\/\/bowenpress.com\/news\/bowen_74189.html\">\u00a0letter<\/a>, which spread quickly online in\u00a0<a class=\"meta-loc\" title=\"More news and information about China.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/china\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">China<\/a>\u00a0and was taken down just as swiftly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"310\" data-total-count=\"1088\">[&#8230;] The letter was issued in the name of Zhou Fang, who gave his work address as Xinhua News Agency headquarters in Beijing, and included his cellphone number and identity card number. A man who answered the phone at that number said that he was Mr. Zhou, an employee of Xinhua, and that he had written the letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"209\" data-total-count=\"1297\">\u201cI don\u2019t deny that,\u201d he said. He said that he had been an editor at the news agency and that he now held an administrative job. \u201cI can\u2019t say anything more, because you\u2019re foreign media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"209\" data-total-count=\"1297\">[&#8230;]\u00a0The new letter criticized the denunciations of Mr. Ren [Zhiqiang] on party-run websites, which called him a traitor and a subversive for taking issue with Mr. Xi\u2019s demand that state-run media unfailingly obey the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"209\" data-total-count=\"1297\">[&#8230;]\u00a0\u201cThe recent Internet security incident of \u2018surrounding and attacking Ren Zhiqiang\u2019 in a kind of Cultural Revolution-style mass criticism brought the delinquency of responsibilities and abuses of power by the Internet authorities to an extreme,\u201d said the letter, which was dated Monday but spread widely only on Friday. [&#8230;] [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/12\/world\/asia\/china-censorship.html\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"209\" data-total-count=\"1297\">The Xi administration has also overseen an <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2015\/11\/infraction-of-the-week-improper-discussion\/\">increasing intolerance of dissenting viewpoints expressed in Party dialogue<\/a>, a trend that drew an unexpected call from state-run Global Times editor Hu Xijin for the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/chinarealtime\/2016\/02\/17\/free-speech-in-china-gets-an-unlikely-state-media-backer\/\">encouragement\u00a0of constructive criticism and\u00a0more tolerance of unconstructive criticism<\/a>. Amid the tightening of ideological control in the Party, an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2016\/03\/tycoons-silencing-hangs-over-beijings-two-sessions\/\">air of tension was noted hanging over the recent top political meetings in Beijing<\/a>.\u00a0Last week, independent financial media company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2016\/03\/caixin-exposes-government-censorship\/\">Caixin Media drew attention to the censorship of an article quoting a delegate on the need for unrestrained commentary<\/a> by posting\u00a0an English-language article\u00a0on the deletion (that article too was quickly and unsurprisingly deleted). At The Guardian,\u00a0Emma Graham-Harrison and Tom Phillips <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/mar\/13\/china-censorship-economy-editor\"><strong>profile Caixin founding editor Hu Shuli, a media professional known for her canny ability to skirt the line of sensitivity, focusing on\u00a0her unique position in Xi&#8217;s China<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Hu-Shuli\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"in-body-link\">Editor Hu Shuli\u00a0<\/a>has spent decades nurturing her connections to China\u2019s elite, able to read opaque political currents, a gift to go right up to the government\u2019s red line and push it but \u201cnever cross it\u201d, with two incarnations of a powerful financial news magazine.<\/p>\n<p>So when she defied a climate of tightening government controls to publish the dramatic warning about official censorship, it sent shock waves across a\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/china\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">China<\/a>\u00a0increasingly cowed by controls on media, activists and any organisations beyond the sphere of direct Communist party control.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]\u00a0The crackdown [on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/china\/civil-society\/\">civil society activism<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2016\/01\/189833\/\">the media<\/a>] has gathered pace as worries about China\u2019s economy accumulate, timing that many analysts say is no coincidence.
