The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnoddt.com\/\">China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater issued a statement<\/a> today, currently posted prominently on their website homepage:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In preparation for the large-scale symphonic and choral concert &#8220;On the Field of Hope,&#8221; our partner fabricated the &#8220;Communist Party Central Committee Propaganda Department Office of Socialist Core Value Propaganda and Education&#8221; and supplied fake materials, betraying our trust. Our partner\u00a0joint acted with us as the sponsoring work unit of the concert, held on May 2 in the Great Hall of the People. We will pursue\u00a0the responsible persons in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater<\/p>\n<p>May 6, 2016<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-193715\" src=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/0.jpeg\" alt=\"0\" width=\"500\" height=\"688\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/0.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/0-218x300.jpeg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/2016\/05\/%E5%BC%A7%E5%BA%A6-%E5%9C%A8%E4%BA%BA%E6%B0%91%E5%A4%A7%E4%BC%9A%E5%A0%82%E6%90%9E%E7%BA%A2%E6%AD%8C%E4%BC%9A%E7%9A%84%E4%B8%80%E4%B8%AA%E4%B8%BB%E5%8A%9E%E6%96%B9%E8%A2%AB%E9%AA%97%E5%95%A6\/\">56 Flowers director Chen Guangze stated that he just learned about the fake office and is not prepared to speak on the issue.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fakery aside, the program&#8217;s overt references to the early days of the People&#8217;s Republic\u00a0seem all too sincere.\u00a0Wearing the red scarves of Young Pioneers, 56 Flowers sang 30 &#8220;red songs,&#8221; including a Cultural Revolution favorite, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sailing_the_Seas_Depends_on_the_Helmsman\">Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman<\/a>.&#8221; Vintage images\u00a0from the 1950s and 1960s shone on the display behind them, including a painting of revolutionaries beneath a red flag emblazoned with a quote from Mao Zedong: &#8220;People of the world, unite to defeat the American invaders and their running dogs!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-193718\" src=\"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mmexport1462449845365.jpg\" alt=\"mmexport1462449845365\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mmexport1462449845365.jpg 750w, https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/mmexport1462449845365-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a Global Times op-ed, Shan Renping (a pen name of editor Hu Xijin) doubts that the concert had any &#8220;official backdrop.&#8221; He welcomes the controversy it has stirred up, acknowledging that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.ifeng.com\/a\/20160506\/48707628_0.shtml\">right now there are relatively more online posts remembering the Cultural Revolution. This is to be expected.\u00a0After all, this year is its 50th anniversary.<\/a>&#8221; He then\u00a0reminds readers that the central government &#8220;thoroughly disavowed the Cultural Revolution&#8221; in its 1981 &#8220;Resolution on Party\u00a0Historical Issues After the Founding of the Country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Weibo, military historian and Big V Cai Xiaoxin\u00a0asks\u00a0why 56 Flowers director Chen Guangze has avoided discussing the imaginary government office: &#8220;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/weibo.com\/1672097180\/DulTQxR6F\">Who did this illegal deed?<\/a><\/strong>&#8221; Commenters speculate:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Suxiaojiaohua\u00a0<\/em>(@\u82cf\u5c0f\u53eb\u5316): It&#8217;s just profiteers.<\/p>\n<p>hydrofrac: Red songs are out?
