A breakthrough was made this month with the Vatican <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2018\/02\/pope-francis-likely-sign-deal-chinese-bishops\/\">poised to strike a deal with China that would allow\u00a0the Chinese government to appoint bishops<\/a>. This development comes after the Vatican agreed at the end of January to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/29\/world\/asia\/china-catholics-vatican.html\">replace two of its bishops by those approved by the Chinese Communist Party<\/a>, which signalled the pope&#8217;s willingness to compromise with China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Cardinal Joseph Zen, the outspoken 86-year-old former head of the Catholic Church of Hong Kong, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-vatican\/cardinal-says-vatican-china-deal-would-put-catholics-in-communist-cage-idUSKBN1FT23M\"><strong>rebuked the Vatican-China deal and accused the Vatican on Friday of acting \u201cunfaithfully,\u201d<\/strong><\/a> arguing that the move would effectively put Chinese Catholics under the full control of the Communist Party&#8211;as it is highly unlikely that Pope Francis would have the final say in the appointment of bishops as promised by the agreement. Venus Wu at Reuters reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThey (The Chinese government) say the last word belongs to the Holy Father. Sounds wonderful? But it\u2019s fake,\u201d Zen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThey are not going to make good choices for the Church &#8230; surely they choose the one they prefer, which means the one who always obeys the government. So how (could) the Holy Father approve such a choice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]\u00a0Zen said that under the status quo, which he described as \u201cthe lesser evil,\u201d the Vatican secretly approves candidates who are acceptable to both sides before the state-controlled Church makes them bishop.<\/p>\n<p>But under the new agreement, where candidates would be selected via a \u201cso-called democratic election\u201d inside the Chinese Catholic community and endorsed by a state-controlled bishops\u2019 conference before being submitted to the pope, the choice lies entirely in the hands of the government, Zen said. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-china-vatican\/cardinal-says-vatican-china-deal-would-put-catholics-in-communist-cage-idUSKBN1FT23M\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"headline\" class=\"headline\">At The New York Times,\u00a0Yi-Zheng Lian writes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/08\/opinion\/pope-china-deal-vatican.html\">the Holy See is bowing to China and making major concessions in part to keep pace with Protestantism<\/a> as the Catholic Church continues to lose ground to other Christian denominations among Chinese converts. Christianity is growing rapidly in China, with the number of adherents exceeding 80 million. The vast majority of new converts are Protestants, with some estimates suggesting that there is only one Catholic for every five Protestants in the country.\u00a0At The Atlantic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2018\/02\/catholic-vatican-china\/552800\/\"><strong>Caroline Kitchener looks at why Catholicism is falling behind and losing appeal<\/strong><\/a> among the young in China.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\">Particularly among young people in China, the Catholic Church has a messaging problem. Over the past few months, I\u2019ve spoken to more than 30 young Christians at universities across the country. These students, who found Christianity through American teachers, student fellowships, or local churches, identify simply as Christians. None know the words \u201cBaptist,\u201d \u201cLutheran,\u201d or \u201cPresbyterian\u201d\u2014popular denominations of Protestantism\u2014and most aren\u2019t sure what it means to be \u201cProtestant\u201d (the word doesn\u2019t translate into Chinese). They do, however, all know the word \u201cCatholic\u201d\u2014and they\u2019re convinced it has nothing to do with Christianity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cCatholics believe in Mary, but we believe in Jesus,\u201d said a senior at Hengyang Normal University in Hunan, China. \u201cCatholics have a different bible or something like that.\u201d Another senior at Jiangxi Normal University said, \u201cCatholics believe in Mary\u2014that makes people believe in two Gods, and it\u2019s not right.\u201d When I told this student that I was raised Catholic, she looked concerned. \u201cBut does that mean you\u2019re in a cult?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">[&#8230;] Many of these students have parents or grandparents who engage in Buddhist or Daoist rituals, even if they don\u2019t identify with those faiths. In China, 44 percent of religiously unaffiliated people have<span class=\"s1\"> worshipped<\/span> at a burial site in the past year. Students I spoke with\u2014both Christian and atheist\u2014generally looked down on these traditions, calling them \u201csuperstitious\u201d and \u201cold-fashioned.\u201d Easten Law, a lecturer at American University who specializes in Chinese Christianity, believes this mindset may explain why more young Chinese aren\u2019t choosing to become Catholic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cCatholicism is very high-liturgy,\u201d Law said. There\u2019s a lot of standing up, sitting down, kneeling, and repeating designated words at designated times. \u201cFrom the outside, it can look like a lot of gesturing.\u201d The Catholic mass, he said, might remind young people of the rituals they see their parents perform\u2014rituals they don\u2019t see as connected to religion. \u201cThe more you see things that are heavily ritualized, the more you think of chanting monks in Buddhist temples with incense, the more it seems highly orchestrated, the more it looks \u2018superstitious.\u2019\u201d Chinese young people, he said, want a more \u201cmodern\u201d faith. [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2018\/02\/catholic-vatican-china\/552800\/\"><strong>Source<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, Bishop Marcelo S\u00e1nchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicherald.co.uk\/news\/2018\/02\/06\/china-is-the-best-implementer-of-catholic-social-doctrine-says-vatican-bishop\/\"><strong>praised the Chinese Communist Party for its implementation of the Catholic doctrine<\/strong><\/a>. From the Catholic Herald:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cRight now, those who are best implementing the social doctrine of the Church are the Chinese,\u201d a senior Vatican official has said.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Marcelo S\u00e1nchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, praised the Communist state as \u201cextraordinary\u201d, saying: \u201cYou do not have shantytowns, you do not have drugs, young people do not take drugs\u201d. Instead, there is a \u201cpositive national conscience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]\u00a0Bishop S\u00e1nchez Sorondo said that China was implementing Pope Francis\u2019s encyclical Laudato Si\u2019 better than many other countries and praised it for defending Paris Climate Accord. \u201cIn that, it is assuming a moral leadership that others have abandoned\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;] Bishop S\u00e1nchez Sorondo concluded by saying that China is \u201cdeveloping well\u201d and now has \u201cmany points of agreement\u201d with the Vatican.
