In many ways, <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2017\/09\/china-heading-backward-womens-rights\/\">progress for women&#8217;s rights has reversed in recent years<\/a>. Sexual harassment is still rampant, and <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2018\/01\/despite-significant-effort-chinas-metoo-struggles\/\">a nascent Chinese #metoo movement has faced ongoing barriers<\/a>. Journalists in particular face sexual harassment on the job; a recent study found that 80% of Chinese journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/supchina.com\/2018\/03\/07\/more-than-80-percent-of-female-journalists-in-china-face-sexual-harassment-in-the-workplace\/\">had faced \u201cunwanted sexual behavior, demands, language, and non-verbal or physical contact\u201d<\/a> inflicted by either a manager or a co-worker.  In the workplace, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/china-business\/article\/2136228\/job-convenience-cited-factor-why-women-earn-less-china\">Chinese women routinely earn an average of 22% less than their male counterparts<\/a>, while culturally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2018\/03\/how-women-in-china-feel-about-the-one-child-policy.html\">embedded notions<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2018\/03\/perpetuating-gender-norms-state-home\/\">women&#8217;s place in society emphasize their subservient role to men<\/a>. In job interviews, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-03-08\/chinese-women-asked-about-marriage-pregnancy-in-job-interviews\/9523562\">women are frequently asked about their marital and pregnancy status<\/a>, in violation of anti-discrimination laws. Activists who work to change the status quo are often censored or otherwise silenced. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/genderpaygap?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#genderpaygap<\/a> is actually worse in China than it was decades ago. Chiu&#8217;s second project, <a href=\"https:\/\/nuvoices.com\">N\u00fcVoices, <\/a>is a newly launched editorial collective &#8220;gathering veteran and emerging writers, journalists, translators and artists to celebrate and support the diverse creative work of women working on the subject of China (broadly defined).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Time Out Beijing listed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeoutbeijing.com\/features\/Books-Book_Features\/153872\/The-best-books-on-women-in-China.html\">the &#8220;best books on women in China,&#8221;<\/a> while the New York Times<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/obituaries\/overlooked-qiu-jin.html\"> profiled feminist poet and revolutionary Qiu Jin as part of a series of retroactive obituaries for women who had been overlooked by history<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Qiu Jin 1875-1907<\/p>\n<p>With her passion for wine and bomb making, Qiu Jin was unlike most women born in late 19th-century China.
