During a video-conference call with Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, Xi Jinping announced<\/a> that \u201cHong Kong must always be governed by patriots.\u201d Xi\u2019s demand for \u201cpatriotic\u201d politicians mirrored mainland calls that Hong Kong\u2019s education system become more patriotic<\/a>, which only intensified after the 2020 passage of the National Security Law (NSL)<\/a>. Earlier this month, the Hong Kong government arrested every single pro-democracy candidate<\/a> for upcoming LegCo elections and charged them with \u201csubversion\u201d under the NSL.
