She sought a public apology and 50,000 yuan ($7,600) in damages, but was repeatedly stonewalled by the court and prevented from presenting evidence that would support her case.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Court ruled against Xianzi bc of &quot;insufficient evidence&quot; but had also stonewalled her requests to retrieve video evidence &amp; to compel defendant Zhu Jun to appear in court (Xianzi described this in May: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/umbnsR5s0O\">https:\/\/t.co\/umbnsR5s0O<\/a>). Below is a summary of some of the points she raised <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/G6z3DUopId\">pic.twitter.com\/G6z3DUopId<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Darius Longarino \u9f99\u5927\u745e (@DariusLongarino) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DariusLongarino\/status\/1437807856875708430?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After going public about her experience, Xianzi faced additional obstacles and threats: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/2165974\/chinas-metoo-movement-takes-legal-turn-woman-applies-counter-sue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhu Jun sued her for damaging his reputation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which resulted in her civil case against him; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2020\/12\/translation-xianzi-i-want-people-to-view-my-case-as-a-drill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her parents were threatened and pressured by police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get her to drop the case; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/international\/chinese-court-throws-out-first-metoo-case-1030483.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her personal Weibo account was blocked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as were the accounts of other women\u2019s rights groups who shared posts about the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>CDT has published a number of translations related to Xianzi&#8217;s case, including <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2018\/10\/xianzi-classmate-maishao-metoo-makes-us-believe-gentleness-can-change-the-world\/\">essays posted in 2018 by Xianzi herself and Classmate Maishao<\/a>, a blogger who helped her story gain widespread attention; an <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2020\/12\/translation-xianzi-i-want-people-to-view-my-case-as-a-drill\/\">interview with Xianzi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2020\/12\/translation-xianzis-friends-surround-and-watch-in-metoo-solidarity\/\">accounts from her supporters<\/a> last December, when her case received a court hearing; and an <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2021\/05\/translation-i-hope-that-this-cry-is-loud-enough-by-xianzi\/\">essay posted by Xianzi in May on the eve of a scheduled second hearing<\/a> which was then unexpectedly postponed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite today\u2019s decision, the case has become part of the public legal record and the public zeitgeist, setting precedents that could make it easier for other women to come forward in the future. At the Diplomat, Huizhong Wu and Sam McNeil detail <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2021\/09\/beijing-court-rules-against-woman-in-china-metoo-case\/\"><strong>some of the ways that Zhou Xiaoxuan broke new ground by bringing her case to court:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout, Zhou has pushed to make the court hearing a matter of public record and requested the court order Zhu Jun to appear, citing basic legal procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she filed the suit in 2018, such complaints were treated as labor disputes or under other laws that didn\u2019t relate directly to sexual harassment. Zhou\u2019s was termed a \u201cpersonality rights dispute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The court rejected a request by her lawyers to have her case heard under a legal provision enacted after she filed the suit that explicitly cites sexual harassment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe that justice in these basic procedures is a necessary path to take to get a fair result, and all the efforts we made before the hearing are not just for victory, but for a fundamental fairness,\u201d Zhou wrote on her WeChat social media account on Monday.
