A solitary protestor hung two banners<\/span><\/a> calling for Xi Jinping to be removed from office and exhorting the populace to \u201cBe citizens, not slaves,\u201d an extremely rare act of overt political defiance on the eve of the 20th Party Congress. The unknown protester hung the banners from busy Sitong Bridge in Beijing\u2019s northwestern Haidian district and lit a fire in an apparent bid to draw attention. Police later removed the banners. The red and white hand-lettered banner at left read: \u201cWe want food, not COVID tests; reform, not Cultural Revolution. We want freedom, not lockdowns; elections, not rulers. We want dignity, not lies. Be citizens, not slaves.\u201d The banner at right read: \u201cBoycott classes. Boycott work. Depose the traitorous despot Xi Jinping.\u201d <\/span>

Police arrived shortly after he saw the smoke, he said.<\/span> \n<\/span> \n<\/span>[…] Along one strip of stores, a police officer went door to door speaking to shopkeepers, while a number of police vehicles were stationed at each corner. Police officers directed traffic flow, which was otherwise normal for a Thursday afternoon. The overpass appeared to have been cleaned up.<\/span> \n<\/span> \n<\/span>[…] \u201c#Haidian# tiny spark,\u201d one Weibo user wrote in the short window of time before censors closed in, alluding to a revolutionary saying made famous by Mao Zedong: \u201cA tiny spark can set the prairie ablaze.\u201d [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/rare-beijing-protest-channels-covid-frustrations-before-communist-party-meeting-11665659124\">Source<\/strong><\/a>]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\nThe protest ignited Weibo with commentary on the bravery of the protestor. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688241.html\">CDT Chinese compiled dozens of comments, a selection of which are translated below<\/strong><\/a>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote> \n<\/span>@\u6f6eSu\uff1aO brave one, I salute you! 2022.10.13<\/span><\/p>\n@\u68d2\u5d3d\u7684\u4e0d\u5bc2\u5bde\u661f\u7403\u00b73\u00b7\uff1aDon’t be silent, speak up. [<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688282.html\">Chinese<\/strong><\/a>]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688188.html\">A vast array of terms, some only tangentially related to the protest, were censored<\/span><\/a> in its aftermath. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688237.html\">On Weibo, searches for \u201cbrave,\u201d \u201cthe brave one,\u201d \u201cbridge,\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 \u201csalute,\u201d \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fZHooclFQBM\">Haidian<\/span><\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/F-nSpfYY_yQ\">hero<\/span><\/a>\u201d only returned results from government-affiliated accounts, or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2022\/09\/discussion-of-lhasa-covid-outbreak-censored-on-weibo\/\">Blue V\u2019s,<\/span><\/a>\u201d indicating intense censorship. Weibo also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZeyiYang\/status\/1580558741766012929\">banned the hashtag #Beijing<\/span><\/a>. Douyin, TikTok\u2019s Chinese sister app, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AgiaiNw_3Yw\">restricted search results for \u201cBeijing\u201d to government affiliated accounts<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688188.html\">Searches for \u201cSitong Bridge\u201d returned next to no results across Weibo, Zhihu, Douban, and Baidu<\/span><\/a>. In at least one case, sharing an image of the protest in a WeChat group led to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688188.html\">a 24-hour ban from the platform\u2019s group chat and Moments features<\/span><\/a>. QQ Music deleted all comments under the song \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SzWxGpEjpEE\">The Brave One<\/span><\/a>\u201d by No Party For Cao Dong. Apple Music removed the song \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/f8fqsx-JhBE\">Sitong Bridge<\/span><\/a>\u201d from its Chinese streaming service and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/baike.baidu.com\/error.html?status=404&uri=\/item\/%E5%9B%9B%E9%80%9A%E6%A1%A5\/867625\">Baidu removed a page on the song<\/span><\/a> from its digital encyclopedia. CDT\u2019s Eric Liu, a former censor, pointed out that the intensity of this round of censorship rivaled, if not surpassed, the bout that followed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2021\/11\/inside-peng-shuais-accusation-against-former-top-leader-metoo-censorship-and-resistance-discourse\/\">Peng Shuai\u2019s accusation that former Politburo Standing Committee member Zhang Gaoli sexually assaulted her<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\nweibo said the statement "I saw it" "violated rules and regulations" and suspended the user for 60 days we've reached the point where both "I saw it" and "I didn't see anything" could be illegal <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8slC2kQvat\">https:\/\/t.co\/8slC2kQvat<\/a><\/p>\n— Chenchen Zhang \ud83e\udd26\ud83c\udffb\u200d\u2640\ufe0f (@chenchenzh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chenchenzh\/status\/1580572621170970625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 13, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\nIn contrast:<\/p>\nA search of Shenzhen: 12399106 results A search of Guangzhou: 13241229 results A search of Shanghai: 38868221 results<\/p>\n— Kerry Allen \u51ef\u4e3d (@kerrya11en) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kerrya11en\/status\/1580496228520902656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 13, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\nThe stringent censorship of posts related to the Beijing bridge incident is in line with a broader intensification of censorship in the lead-up to the 20th Party Congress. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688024.html\">Even innocuous commentary is now subject to erasure<\/span><\/a>. Now-deleted examples include a post predicting an upcoming rainstorm; a gif of a person mopping the ocean, with the caption \u201cidiocy with no end in sight\u201d; and smiley-face and bear emojis. In the latter case, a group of students were attempting to avoid censorship of the word \u201cbust size,\u201d and used the bear emoji as a homophonous stand-in for breasts\u2014unaware that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2022\/07\/list-of-derogatory-nicknames-for-xi-leaked-amid-crackdown-on-typos\/\">it could be construed as an insult for Xi Jinping<\/span><\/a>. (This is not unprecedented. Earlier this year students who thought they had happened upon a WeChat “bug” were, in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2022\/03\/wechat-bug-turns-out-to-be-obscure-insult-for-xi-jinping\/\">using an obscure insult for Xi that triggered automatic censorship<\/a>.) <\/span><\/p>\nWeibo began <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EricLiu_USA\/status\/1579956978318643200\">censoring search results for the term<\/span><\/a> \u201cOne Press, Three Functions,\u201d a Bilibili feature that allows users to like and save a video while tipping the creator, because it is roughly homophonous with, \u201cPresto, three consecutive terms,\u201d an oblique reference to Xi Jinping\u2019s all-but-guaranteed upcoming third term in office. Douban <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221013191300\/https:\/\/www.douban.com\/group\/topic\/276545247\/?_i=5688323M82alyP\">censored pages related to the Japanese manga \u201cDeath Note\u201d<\/span><\/a>, perhaps due to fear that netizens were using the central conceit of the story, that whoever’s name is written in the eponymous notebook will die, to discuss Xi. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/chinese\/688153.html\">One commenter asked<\/span><\/a>: \u201cHow did Douban know I write his name in my heart\u2019s ‘Death Note’ every day?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\nMentioning Xi in posts to foreign social media can also be dangerous for Chinese internet users. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MianMaoKu\/status\/1580342284410724352\">Twitter user @MianMaoKu posted a thread<\/span><\/a> alleging local police and plainclothes officers came to her house near midnight, brought her to a local police station, and demanded she delete tweets regarding \u201cTHE leader\u201d and forced her to sign a promise to \u201ctry not to post anything sensitive regarding the national leader.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThe rise in censorship has been accompanied by a crackdown on the tools used to skirt the Great Firewall. Great Firewall Report, an organization that monitors censorship in China, found that China has blocked servers that host protocols employing transport layer security (TLS) to avoid censorship. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/tech\/policy\/article\/3195045\/china-blocks-internet-anticensorship-tools-ahead-20th-party-congress?utm_content=article&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1665064982-1\">GFW Report told The South China Morning Post<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThis new blocking coincides with the most politically sensitive weeks in China.\u201d A study published in the academic journal PNAS found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/graphic-detail\/2022\/09\/28\/covid-19-inspired-people-to-circumvent-censorship-in-china\">downloads of VPNs\u2014tools often used to circumvent internet controls\u2014and searches for sensitive content jumped during lockdowns<\/span><\/a>, as did Twitter use.
