{"id":3348,"date":"2005-05-31T18:49:34","date_gmt":"2005-06-01T01:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2005\/05\/31\/mure-dickie-blow-for-china-oil-investors-suing-state\/"},"modified":"2005-05-31T18:49:34","modified_gmt":"2005-06-01T01:49:34","slug":"mure-dickie-blow-for-china-oil-investors-suing-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chinadigitaltimes.net\/2005\/05\/mure-dickie-blow-for-china-oil-investors-suing-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Mure Dickie: Blow for China oil investors suing state"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.ft.com\/cms\/s\/9c7475f2-d21a-11d9-8c82-00000e2511c8.html\">From Financial Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Chinese court has refused to hear a landmark lawsuit by hundreds of private investors whose oil wells were seized by the state and police have detained their lawyer, people familiar with the case said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The detention of Zhu Jiuhu, a widely respected lawyer, by authorities in China&#8217;s northern province of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shaanxi\">Shaanxi<\/a> has dealt a heavy blow to the campaign by oil entrepreneurs to challenge the provincial government&#8217;s seizure of thousands of oil wells worth Rmb7bn (\u00ac\u00a3465m).<\/p>\n<p>However, the action against Mr Zhu and the refusal of the provincial Higher People&#8217;s Court to accept what would be China&#8217;s biggest private lawsuit against the state is also likely to undermine confidence in China&#8217;s commitment to legal process and protection of private property.<\/p>\n<p>People familiar with the situation said at least five oil investors&#8217; representatives had also been detained by local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>A judicial official in Jingbian, an oil-rich but otherwise impoverished county in northern Shaanxi, said Mr Zhu was being held on suspicion of &#8220;illegal assembly and disturbing the social order&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Financial Times: A Chinese court has refused to hear a landmark lawsuit by hundreds of private investors whose oil wells were seized by the state and police have detained their lawyer, people familiar with the case said on Tuesday.
