墙国 (qiángguó): wall nation

In Mandarin, “wall nation” sounds the same as “mighty nation” (强国 qiángguó). There is much talk in China about rising up after years of foreign aggression to become “a mighty nation.” The term “wall nation” pokes fun at these nationalistic aspirations by suggesting that China is not becoming “mighty” so much as it is becoming “walled” in by the Great Firewall of China. The character for “wall” has been used to the same effect in other words containing the character for “strong.”
