Li Siban (Chinese: 李思磐) is a Chinese investigative journalist, feminist, and academic. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Macau and is an associate professor at the Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication, Shantou University. Li has served as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University, and is regarded as one of the most prominent journalists and commentators in China on women’s issues.
Li began her career as an investigative reporter for Southern Metropolis Daily and later worked as an editor in the Southern Weekly magazine group. She reported extensively on Greater China and won several journalism awards, including the Bayer Young Environmental Journalist Award and the Southern Metropolis Daily Journalism Prize. As one of the earliest Chinese journalists to investigate workplace and educational sexual harassment, her landmark reports include “Shanmu Dynasty” and the series Sex, Lies and Training Classes/Dangerous Mentors.
In 2004, Li co-founded the feminist media organization Women Awakening Network (新媒体女性) with a group of Guangzhou journalists, which was formally registered as a non-profit in 2013. The group played a leading role in the 2014 case of sexual harassment allegations against Xiamen University professor Wu Chunming, mobilizing academic support and contributing to the Ministry of Education’s first anti-sexual harassment policy guidelines. For her advocacy, Li was named a NetEase “Women Role Model” in 2014 and received the Peking University Anping Public Communication Award. She later served as media and public advocacy lead for the civil society working group that pushed for China’s Anti-Domestic Violence Law, and was recognized by Sina Weibo as a “Public Interest Opinion Leader of the Year” in 2016.
Beyond journalism, Li has worked as an expert consultant for women’s projects with the Guangdong provincial government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and has collaborated with organizations such as UNESCO, the Caixin Foundation, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, and Oxfam Hong Kong on media and communications training.
