A Saga of Sacrifice and Betrayal (Washington Post)

In today’s Washington Post, Philip Pan has written a detailed report on the New Youth Study Group, a small group of Beijing college students who met occasionally to discuss political and social reform, and to write and distribute articles on these topics online.

Four of their members, including the most prominent, Yang Zili, are now serving prison sentences of 8-10 years on “subversion” charges. The article focuses on one member who betrayed the group to the Ministry of Public Security and is now living in Thailand. The article gives a fascinating portrayal of how, as the subtitle says, “beliefs are tested in saga of sacrifice and betrayal.”
