“Express patriotism rationally. Don’t take part in illegal protests. Don’t make trouble,” said the text message sent by Beijing police to millions of mobile phone users in the capital. “Help by not creating trouble, love the nation by not breaking the law.”
Officials of China Mobile, the top service provider, said only that an order had been received from Beijing city authorities to send out the message to all of its nine million subscribers in the capital. The State, not users, would bear the cost.
