In an apparent measure trying to mend fences with China’s aggrieved citizenry, the State Council last week issued a directive ordering government officials withdraw their investment in coal mines.
The directive was prompted by widely reported collusion between local officials and entrepreneurs running the Daxing Mine in Guangdong’s Xingning City, where a deadly accident early this month claimed at least 123 lives.
If anything, the need for Beijing to issue such an urgent directive strongly suggests that Daxing Mine is by no means an isolated case.
