China ‘twice failed to indict newsman’ – Straits Times

From the Straits Times, via Asia Media:

Chinese police tried two times but failed to indict a detained New York Times researcher on suspicion of leaking state secrets, a lawyer close to the case said yesterday.

Their evidence was weak, he claimed.

Mr Zhao Yan was detained in September last year on suspicion of helping the newspaper break the politically sensitive news that then-military chief Jiang Zemin would retire from politics.

‘Twice now, the police have tried to indict him for acquisition of state secrets, but the prosecutor, to its credit, hasn’t yet approved. They do not seem to have sufficient evidence,’ said Mr Jerome Cohen, a China legal expert with New York University who has been involved in the case.
