Tiananmen Protester Released from Jail – AP

A protester jailed after the 1989 Tiananmen protests has been released while another activist who was jailed and freed years ago for his role in the pro-democracy uprising has been detained again, a human rights watchdog said Sunday.

Sun Hong, 36, was released from jail on Saturday, according to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy . It said in a faxed report that Sun, a Beijing worker at the time, was detained in June 1989 and given a death sentence, suspended for two years, for arson. A suspended death sentence is usually commuted to life in prison if the convict is deemed to have reformed. [Full Text]
