China Appoints Political Heavyweight to Clear Air Over Olympics

China’s Big Man To Be appears to have been given his first big task, according to the South China Morning Post. Since SCMP continues to hide it’s content behind a pay-wall (tsk tsk), we have to take the story second-hand from AFP:

Xi Jinping (习近平), seen by many as an heir apparent to president Hu Jintao, will be in charge of organising the huge security operation and defusing international concerns over air pollution in Beijing, the South China Morning Post said.

Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said his appointment was meant to show the world the games had the government’s full attention ahead of the August 8 opening ceremony.

A foreign relations PR test if there ever was one.
