From New America Media:
The arrest of a Chinese American and a Taiwanese American on charges of spying for China has stirred up fears of another Dr. Wen Ho Lee-like witch hunt.
In this interview with New America Media’s UpFront Radio host Sandip Roy, Ling-chi Wang, professor emeritus of Asian studies at UC Berkeley, compares the recent allegations against a
Boeing employee and New Orleans restauranteur for spying on behalf of China with the failed espionage case against the Taiwanese-American atomic scientist Wen Ho Lee in 1999.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security Keneth Wainstein recently described China as “particularly adept and particularly determined and methodical in their espionage efforts.” Wang notes that these comments are…
… quite similar to what J. Edgar Hoover was saying in the 1950s: that China is always going after our high tech and military secrets and, secondly, that China always uses Chinese Americans to do the dirty work for them.
I know of at least 10 cases, most of which have never resulted of any kind of conviction…. oftentimes of these people are forced to plead guilty of some lesser charges, not from the original charge.
