AP reports on a protest by 20,000 people angered over the forced eviction of a 90-year-old woman in southern China:
A 90-year-old woman stood on the roof of her home with a homemade bomb to avoid being evicted, while thousands of protesters defending her clashed with police in southeastern China, a human right monitor and a newspaper reported Saturday.
…The woman, Zhang Xinghua, has been fighting eviction since 2004 and is the last holdout in her neighborhood in Shengzhou, in the southeastern province of Zhejiang, the Beijing News said. Authorities want to evict her to make way for a real estate project. [Full text]
