China marked “Journalists Day” Thursday with state-run media hailing a new era of increasing press freedom in the run-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games , but Western rights groups are largely unimpressed.
In an unusually candid report, the official Xinhua news agency carried comments from a Chinese journalism professor describing how the communist government was grappling with the challenges of a more open media policy. “China has been very discreet about media opening up, because it is viewed as concerning state security,” Yu Guoming, of the Renmin University School of Journalism and Communication in Beijing was quoted as saying.
