According to Xinhua News, current election law has resulted in each rural representative at the China’s National People’s Congress representing four times the population of an urban representative. Now China’s parliament is hoping to change this law to give equal representation to urban and rural China.
China’s parliament is considering amending the election law to give equal representation to rural and urban residents, said a parliament spokesman in Beijing Tuesday.
“Provided the progressing urbanization in China, the present election law needs amending,” said Jiang Enzhu, spokesman for the First Session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), at a press conference.
