Shanghai To Crack Down On Satellite Dishes

Shanghai satelliteFrom Shanghai Daily (h/t the Shanghaiist):

SEVETEEN (sic) government departments will launch a joint city-wide campaign to wipe out illegal television satellites that can receive foreign TV programs across Shanghai, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.

Authorities including Shanghai Media Group, the industrial and commercial administration, public security forces, the real estate bureau, prosecutors and courts have already released notices to more than 11,000 property management companies across the city about the campaign, the report said.

Installations of the satellites in public places such as roof tops and the walls of residential buildings will be major targets during this year’s campaign, the report said.

The authority may dismantle the illegal satellites by force if owners refuse to cooperate, the report added.

As the article notes, satellite TVs are only officially allowed in government complexes, high-end hotels and residential areas where more than 80 percent of residents are foreigners.
