Pakistan-China relations have been in the news lately with President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to China. However, the fate of two Chinese engineers kidnapped in Pakistan in August has received scant attention. But CNN is now reporting that one of the hostages has escaped:
The two engineers, who were kidnapped in August in northern Pakistan, both attempted to escape early Friday but one was shot in the leg and remains in the hands of his abductors, said Muslim Khan, a spokesman for the Taliban.
Khan said the remaining captive had been moved to a new location.
It was not immediately clear what the group has been demanding in exchange for the hostages’ release.
Khan also said that Maulana Fazlullah, the Taliban commander in the Swat district, has ordered an internal investigation into how the two Chinese hostages were able to attempt escape.
