Nine or ten people—sitting or standing, some holding umbrellas, and seen mostly in silhouette—take shelter from the rain under the wooden roof of a small structure alongside a canal in Wuzhen, an historic scenic town in northern Zhejiang province. Most are gazing out at the canal, lined with traditional one- and two-story buildings with tiled rooftops, ivy covered walls and roofs, and windows covered with ornately carved wooden shutters. A long narrow wooden boat, propelled by a man with a long wooden pole, drifts along the canal from the left.
