Construction of “the world’s largest wind power project” will begin this month in Beijing. Xinhua reports that it is part of a larger effort to meet some of China’s growing power demands with renewable energy. This project will also serve the goal of reducing Beijing’s air pollution before the 2008 Olympics.
EcoWorld reports that the Olympics are also driving investment in alternative fuels in Beijing:
“Beijing’s transport authority has the largest, low-emissions CNG bus fleet in the world, with over 2,000 CNG [compressed natural gas] engines. The Authority plans to have its entire 118,000 bus fleet operating on clean energy by the 2008 Olympics (90% retrofitted and 10% replaced with new engines).”
