Interview with Jiao Guobiao

Beijing University recently notified Professor Jiao Guobiao, who earlier wrote a powerful essay against the Central Propaganda Department, that his course for this semester has been cancelled and that he can no longer advise masters research students. Although Professor Jiao told school officials he would not talk to the media about his situation, he gave an interview to Yazhou Zhoukan (Asia Weekly), which eswn has translated here (scroll to bottom of post). In it, Jiao says, “There are still many hidden rules in Chinese society about what may or may not be said.  I hope that I can shine the light on some of these things.  I hope that the roads that I travel will be shined upon.  If everyone brings some light when they walk down the road, then there is hope for China.  I want to say that I love my leaders but I love the constitution even more; I love Beijing University, but I love the truth even more.”
