Activists battle China dam plan

Environmental activists are protesting government plans to build a hydroelectric dam at Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan Province, one of the highest gorges in the world. Wang Hui, of Qinghua University, says, “”The whole economic policy is very pro-development. In order to have high-speed economic development, they do not care about the environment.” The New York Times report (via Phil. Inquirer) is here.

Meanwhile, in Sichuan Province, authorities sent in a huge troop deployment to deal with tens of thousands of farmers protesting against a dam project that will force their relocation. Three protesters have been killed so far, according to press reports.
