China’s moviegate: The Niu Niu Incident

From Chinaelections.org: “The Niu Niu Incident in Shenzhen has yet to catch attention from the Western media but it is certainly going to be as significant as other incidents that have caused us to ponder the dynamics of the Internet and Chinese populace’s emboldening cry for social justice and reigning in corrupt officials.”

Thanks to Dr. Yawei Liu for the link. The full story is here. A collection of Chinese articles on this event is here.

UPDATE: Yellowfrog has also blogged this incident here.

More from the editor of Chinaelection.org: “What is even more significant about the Niu Niu incident is the seemingly orchestrated attempt by the Shenzhen government to discredit this public onslaught from the Internet. The confrontation between the invisible but effective mobilization of the BBSers and the coordinated and deliberate counteroffensive by the government and the media controlled by it is thrilling and poses new questions on the role of the Internet in China.

The BMW incident and the subsequent online outrage triggered a new investigation of the accident. The story of the bulletproof vest wearing Party secretary Huang Jingao became headline among China’s growing population of netizens but it was quickly suppressed. As of now, there does not seem to be any nationwide ban of the online or print reporting of the incident but our repeated efforts to leave messages at the online forum of a Shenzhen newspaper with keywords like “Niu Niu” or “Seven Hours in Time Difference” are being blocked.

One BBSer commented after the story broken first by parents online that the Internet will destroy Niu Niu and her family. Another BBSer wrote after the Shenzhen Party Committee issued the lukewarm statement on the infraction of Niu Niu’s father that if the Party lets Li Yizhen get away with this, the
Party itself may face destruction.”
