Movie review: ‘Postmen in the Mountains’

From the Chicago Trinune: “‘Postmen in the Mountains’ is a quietly touching little Chinese film that wrings considerable beauty and poignancy from seemingly the simplest of subjects. Shot on location in the isolated South Hunan mountain area, it’s about the last three-day trip of the local postman, a kind and dedicated man who has just retired because of ill health and is passing the job to his son.

The postman/father (Teng Rujun), still in his 40s, suffers so badly from joint pain that he seems prematurely aged. The son (Liu Ye), in his early 20s, is fresh and youthful, but enigmatic. Beloved by most of his customers, the older postman has spent much of his married life away from home; he and his son barely know each other. Now, in three days, they have what may be their only real chance for reconnection as, accompanied by the postman’s well-trained and resourceful dog, they go out together on his last rounds.”
