John Ruwitch: Anti-Japanese feelings put China’s leaders in a fix

From Reuters:

Chinese activist Lu Yunfei estimates that by the start of September, 30 million people will have signed his online petition opposing Japan’s bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

“It’s not so large a number,” says the man who runs Patriot’s Alliance Web, putting the figure in the context of China’s population of 1.3 billion.

That may be true. But public opinion is increasingly hard to ignore and is putting the leadership in a tight spot, despite the fact that China is an authoritarian state and policy ultimately eminates from the ruling Communist Party, analysts say.
