Party animals driving China up the wall – Peter Golf

From smh.com.au:

Built to withstand marauding Mongol hordes, the Great Wall of China is being damaged by drunken, drug-taking yobs who hold “blasphemous” raves and “wild orgies” along the country’s most famous monument.

The outdoor parties and barbecues, mainly attended by young Westerners working and studying in China, “severely damage the image of the Great Wall”, said Dong Yaohui of the China Great Wall Association.

“They are desecrating it. The Great Wall carries a very special connotation in our culture and history. They are simply blaspheming our national symbol.”

Summer raves have been held at the Jinshanling section of the wall in Hebei province, about 160 kilometres from Beijing, for the past eight years. Following a recent party the area was left strewn with empty bottles and other litter, and the dawn air was heavy with the stench of urine, vomit and excrement.
