Return of a democrat – Liu Kin-ming

From The Standard:

It took 10 years for the former president of Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui, to visit the United States again.

Back in June 1995, the sitting president returned to his alma mater at Cornell University in upstate New York after an absence of 27 years. China responded with a series of missile tests off the shores of Taiwan. This time round, Lee visited Alaska, New York, Washington and Los Angeles as, declared by the State Department, a “private individual.” China again protested against his visit but without consequence.

What tremendous changes this past decade have brought.
