Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has said the country’s latest mine calamity shows its coal industry remains “chaotic” and perilous, despite his government’s many attempts to improve safety for miners. Wen’s comments followed an explosion in the state-owned Dongfeng Coal Mine in Qitaihe in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang on Nov. 27 that killed 171 miners. Rescue efforts at Qitaihe ended late on Monday, the Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday, as details emerged of the shoddy safety record of what once was held up as a “model” mine.
