24 Killed in Mine Explosion in China – AP

A gas explosion at a mine in northwestern China killed at least 24 miners and left eight missing, the government said Sunday.

Thirty-nine miners were working underground when the blast occurred at the Wayaobao Coal Mine in Shaanxi province, China’s State Administration of Coal said on its Web site.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the explosion occurred Saturday afternoon.

At least 24 died, seven survived with light injuries and eight were still missing, the coal mine safety department said.
