After Sina.com started self-censorship on Apr. 7, it closed 8 columns, shut down 15 forums, deleted 159 articles, erased 510 posts, deleted more than 170 post webpage, revised more than 20 pieces with “improper” titles, and edited about 50 pieces with correct contents but incorrectly-directed titles. In Sina’s forums, 134,015 posts were censored (including main posts and follow-up posts), 71,016 incorrect posts were deleted (including main posts and follow-up posts), 5030 pages were checked. Sina also enforced its management on blogs and news comments.
Sohu.com closed 11 forums, deleted 300 posts. Sohu also imposed economic, administrative and resource punishment for “uncivilized” online behavior.
After advocacy from the Civilization Office, Netease closed 26 forums and about 170 web pages. Due to the closure of the forums, previous posts were inaccessible. Therefore, the number of deleted posts reaches about 1.37 million.
Tom.com, China.com, ynet.com, zhongsou.com, xici.net, Yahoo and hexun.com also implemented strict supervision and self-censorship, deleting improper messages in the websites. Some of them shut down columns. They all managed to clean up the websites completely.
