From Shanghai Daily (link):
NEARLY 40 percent of Chinese cities are suffering from medium to high-levels of air pollution, said the country’s top environment official yesterday.
Among the 522 cities monitored by the State Environmental Protection Administration last year, only 4.2 percent passed the top-grade air quality rating, while 39.7 percent were suffering from air pollution.
Zhou Shengxian, director of the administration, promised that the country will take measures to curb the discharge of sulfur dioxide, by at least 10 percent, in the 11th Five Year Plan.
