China’s Exam Composition Themes Evolve – Xu Zhiqiang

Chen Ping, 19, has indulged himself for almost the last three days in the World Cup broadcasts. Last weekend, he finally “escaped” from the 3-day-long National College Entrance Exam (NCEE), also known as Gaokao, one of the most important examinations in China which determines who will enter colleges among the millions of applicants every year.

Chen Ping doesn’t want to recall the complicated tests anymore, but the theme of the composition test — “I want to hold your hands” — still touched him as a football fan.

“It is an open topic. Maybe many write about holding their lovers’ or parents’ hands, but I wrote about holding hands with my idol, David Beckham. It is my dream,” Chen said. [Full Text]
