Divided by culture, riven by political and ideological differences and impoverished by accusations, for much of this century Japan and China have had a wretched relationship. Yet over the past few years amidst the common hiccups, both these nations share a common goal: to make themselves richer by pursuing trade, not war.
The Japanese government says it will discharge deferred aid loans to China, which were supposed to be sanctioned earlier in March, but were delayed further by Japan as bilateral relations between the two nations deteriorated, sparked by disputes over historical issues and energy resources.
China accuses Japan of failing to repent for historical wrongs, while Japan accuses China of dwelling on the past. But some experts are saying that, though their relationship was normalized in 1972, modern tensions date back to the 1894-5 Sino-Japanese war in which Japan marked its emergence as a world power.
