AS we wait for a possible second North Korean nuclear test, it is well to know how close the US has come to military conflict with North Korea in the recent past.

In April 2003, George W. Bush told Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer of how deeply he had considered taking military action against North Korea.

In a meeting in the White House’s Roosevelt Room, Downer raised North Korea with Bush. He told Bush that the Chinese had to understand that the way they behaved on North Korea would affect their relationship with the US. [Full Text]

– Also a Xinhua-style bulletin: State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan passed on President Hu’s verbal message to the North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. But what is the message? Maybe Xinhua doesn’t know either as the brief bulletin doesn’t say anything beyond that.
– Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao say nothing more than Xinhua. “The visit is still underway and the delegation hasn’t returned to Beijing yet. I don’t have the information concerning the specific details of the visit,” says Liu.
