The nucelar test by North Korea has triggered strong reactions in China, both by the government and the Chinese people. The following is a quick summary of the official response in Beijing and the unofficial responses in the ever expanding cyberspace.

According to Zuo Qiao, China has never used such strong rhetoric in its recent diplomacy. He offered a very interesting explanation of China’s outrage: Pyongyang selected the worst time for China to conduct the nuclear weapon test:
a. It is China’s golden weeklong holiday, celebrating the national day and the mid-term festival. Yes, Pyongyang wants to ruin the party.
b. Shinzo Abe is in China on a relationship repair mission. Certainly, the Korean Peninsular nuclear crisis is on the agenda and it should be disrupted.
c. CCP’s 6th Plenum is in process. Kim Jong Il wants to send a message to the Chinese decision-makers: abandoning DPRK is political suicide.
