China’s Top Court to Review All Death Penalties – AFP

From AFP:

China’s highest court will begin to review, from January 1, every death sentence in the country under a change of law that seeks to end miscarriages of justice.

But just a few day before the new regulation comes into force, a slew of death penalties were announced in the state media, giving rise to speculation that local courts might be rushing to escape the more rigorous legal procedure.

The chief justice, Xiao Yang, who first announced the new legislation in October, said three new criminal tribunals had already been set up and a review team expanded to work under the new system, China Daily reported Friday.
