Nearly 40 pc Yellow River fish population extinct, say Chinese officials – kerala

Chinese government officials on conditions of anonymity said that increased human activity like disruptive dams, pollution and overall environmental catastrophe had led to about 40 percent of the fish population going extinct.

“There used to be more than 150 species of fish living in the Yellow River, but one-third have disappeared for good,” the National Geographic quoted an unnamed Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) official as saying to the China People’s Daily newspaper.

“Overfishing, persistent dumping, and hydropower projects along the river have degraded the underwater ecological environment,” he said.[Full Text]
